Hearing loss is common in older people and is often caused by repeated exposure to loud noises. Hearing loss can be sudden or gradual, temporary or permanent. Hearing disorders can make it difficult, but not impossible, to hear. However, deafness can prevent you hearing any sound at all. Factors that may cause hearing loss are genetics, ear infections or meningitis, trauma, certain medications, long-term exposure to loud noise and aging.
