Wearing a facemask during exercise to limit exposure to outdoor air pollution reduces symptoms and is associated with objective improvements in myocardial ischemia, blood pressure and heart rate variability in people with coronary heart disease (CHD), according to new data presented at the World Congress of Cardiology (WCC) Scientific Sessions in Beijing, China today.

Results from an open-label randomized, crossover trial conducted in 98 CHD patients in Beijing demonstrated that the facemask intervention reduced general symptoms, perceived effort of work and perception of pollution for all study participants. Moreover, when participants wore a facemask mean arterial blood pressure was lower and heart rate variability was increased during the exercise period, while maximal ST segment depression was reduced throughout the 24-hour study period.

"Particulate air pollution is a major public health concern and is associated with cardiovascular disease," said Jeremy Langrish, Clinical Research Fellow, Centre for Cardiovascular Science, University of Edinburgh. "In this study we investigated the effects of reducing exposure to particulate air pollution in patients with CHD. We found that wearing a simple but highly efficient facemask can improve cardiovascular health. Reducing exposure to particulate air pollution may prevent cardiovascular events in patients with heart disease living in industrialized or urban environments."

This British Heart Foundation supported clinical trial involved 98 CHD patients from the Cardiovascular Institute & Fuwai Hospital (Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences) who were asked to walk on a pre-defined city centre route in central Beijing for two-hours. Personal exposure to air pollution and exercise was assessed continuously using portable monitors and GPS tracking respectively, whilst continuous 12-lead ECGs were recorded using a Holter Monitor and symptoms were assessed using a simple questionnaire.

Hypocracy or Just Plain Corporate Greed

posted by Roderick J.Belanger on 11 Dec 2010 at 10:09 pm

It is 12:45am ,Ihave just returned to my home in Orrington ,Maine which is near one of the finest Acute Care hospital I know of.I am a retiered health care proffessional and have worked with hospitals in New York City , Massachusetts and In Maine. Most Doctors that I know work brutally long and gruelling daays, especially general practitioners. I would be remiss if I didn't say the same about Nurses, Aids and those beloved transporters and all oters conected with the running of hospital. There is always an issue that goes before a bargening table and hundreds of voices are raised to poit oput the primary focuis is on Patient Care! Lets stop the Bullshit and admit that the real reason for the increase of health care needs stems from Industrial pollution - companies who have borught places like Hudson Falls,New York to ther knees after installing one of their "GREEN" refuse burning waste to cheap electric power plants. We have one in Orington and there is five more in the state with talk of building two more. These plants alone put enough particles in the , epecisll between the hours of 12:30am to about %:00am,which is why i'm not in bed sleeping. There is also an increased movement to bring more air poluting industry to our state. Wood burning ;by folks unable to pay the usorious charges generated by the greedy petropilium industries, has escalated exonentially in our neighborhood and the country as well.

DEP monitors the air quality of these plants and other industries, but they do nothing about the air quality inside or outside your homes, and whatever you use to get to work in. Let me conclude by saying my retirement is hell due to a plethora of health isuues caused by the expansive amount of air polution ib Bangor, Maine and it's neighbors.I have spent approximately $30,000 overs the last 2 years , getting help from the owners of such companies as Air Pura, NQ Clarifier Industries, York Industies and many other local engineers and air polution experts. I know my story is just one, but the reality is that no-one living in thses United States isreally aware of how bad our is right now. What I can't understand that those same people worry more about their bank account and "the bottom line" then their families, freinds and their own health. If we stop the greed and stop the need to polute we will possibly be truly able to give appropriate and effective healtcare.
