Cannabidiol (CBD) and aloe vera are two nutrient-rich plant compounds that have numerous potential health benefits. There is an increasing number of products on the market that contain both.
CBD is one of more than 100 other cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD provides anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and other medicinal properties without the psychoactive effects that people associate with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Aloe vera has significant medicinal benefits. It contains numerous compounds, including minerals, amino acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. These compounds promote wound healing and reduce inflammation.
This article discusses the benefits of CBD and aloe vera and looks at some of the available products that combine these powerful ingredients.
Is CBD legal? Hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are legal federally but still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products, on the other hand, are illegal federally but legal under some state laws. Check local legislation, especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not approved nonprescription CBD products, which may be inaccurately labeled.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), cannabinoids may help treat:
- chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
- loss of appetite and weight loss due to HIV and AIDS
- chronic pain
- multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms
In a 2015 animal study, researchers found that 0.6–6.2 milligrams (mg) daily doses of topical CBD gel significantly reduced joint swelling and pain in rats with arthritis.
While these results do not accurately represent how topical CBD affects humans, the study itself suggests that topical CBD may be a promising adjunctive therapy for people with arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.
Topical CBD offers pain relief and inflammation reduction without causing the gastrointestinal problems that some people develop when taking oral arthritis medication.
According to the findings of one 2018 internet-based cross-sectional study of 2,409 people, most of whom resided in the United States, more than half of the respondents reported using CBD to treat one or more of the following conditions:
- chronic pain
- arthritis joint pain
- sleep disorder, such as insomnia
- migraine and headache disorders
- post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms
Of these respondents, 35.8% reported that CBD worked “very well by itself” for treating their medical condition.
A recent 2019 retrospective study suggests that topical CBD may also help prevent acne-related scarring and excess skin cell growth due to psoriasis.
Aloe vera is a succulent plant that grows in hot, dry, subtropical regions. The leaves of the aloe vera plant contain a water-based gel and a dry latex or pulp.
People often use aloe vera gel as a topical ointment for skin injuries, such as:
- insect bites
- inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema
- pressure ulcers and diabetic ulcers
A systematic review of studies showed that aloe vera not only promotes faster wound healing, but it also improves skin integrity, increases skin hydration, and prevents ulcer formation.
Aloe vera latex can produce laxative effects when consumed orally. Although low doses of aloe vera latex may help relieve constipation, it can also lead to adverse effects, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and electrolyte imbalance.
This section provides a list of some products that contain both CBD aloe vera.
