Cosentyx comes in a few forms. How long the drug can stay out of the fridge can depend on the form, but for some forms, it’s up to 4 days.

Cosentyx is a brand-name injection that doctors prescribe for plaque psoriasis and certain kinds of arthritis.

It comes as a solution in three single-use forms to administer as a subcutaneous injection:

  • an UnoReady pen
  • a Sensoready pen
  • a prefilled syringe

It’s also available as a liquid solution in a single-dose vial to administer as an intravenous (IV) infusion. Only a healthcare professional can administer this form.

Your healthcare professional can administer your first subcutaneous injection. Once they train you, you can give yourself these injection types at home.

Store all forms of Cosentyx in the refrigerator before use. Specifically, keep them between 36ºF and 46ºF (2ºC to 8ºC). You do not want to freeze Cosentyx.

Keep Cosentyx in its original carton to protect it from light until use. It comes in single-dose syringes or pens and doesn’t contain a preservative, so you need to discard any unused portion.

You can keep Cosentyx Sensoready pens and prefilled syringes at room temperature out of the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Avoid storing them at temperatures above 86°F (30°C) during that time. You can only return them to the refrigerator once.

If you’re traveling by plane with Cosentyx, follow the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules for flying with medications. Medications, including medically necessary liquids, are typically allowable as long as you declare them.

Before screening, let the TSA officer know that you’re carrying medications. Place Cosentyx in a separate bin from your other belongings. And If you’re using freezer packs to manage the temperature of Cosentyx, make sure they’re fully frozen.

Most medications can safely undergo X-ray screening, but the TSA can also screen them in other ways. To learn more, see the TSA website.

You can keep Cosentyx Sensoready pens and prefilled syringes at room temperature for 4 days. So, if you need to travel without cold storage, you may want to talk with your doctor about whether you can administer those forms of the drug during that time.

What happens if Cosentyx isn’t refrigerated?

Cosentyx is no longer safe to administer without refrigerating it properly or after keeping certain forms at room temperature for longer than 4 days. Discard any medication that has experienced improper storage.
