Both Abilify and Rexulti may cause weight gain. One study found that Abilify and Rexulti had a similar effect on body weight after the medications were taken for 1 year.

Abilify and Rexulti have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat the following.
- Both Abilify and Rexulti are FDA-approved to treat:
- schizophrenia in adults
- major depressive disorder in adults, when used in combination with an antidepressant
- Abilify is also FDA-approved to treat:
- manic and mixed episodes in adults with bipolar I disorder, either alone or in combination with lithium (Lithobid) or valproate

Abilify or Rexulti and children
Abilify and Rexulti have been approved by the FDA to treat the following conditions in children.

Review of studies. Separate studies of Abilify and Rexulti were compared in a larger review of studies. This review found that Abilify and Rexulti were similarly effective for treating episodes of schizophrenia.
In another review of studies, Abilify and Rexulti were found to be similarly effective for treating major depressive disorder (MDD).
It’s important to remember that these results may not apply to your individual health situation. Be sure to discuss with your doctor whether Abilify or Rexulti may be right for you.

Treatment guidelines. Another way to see whether a drug is considered effective is to look at treatment guidelines.
When an organization includes certain drugs in treatment guidelines, this means that research has shown the drug to be safe and effective.
Antipsychotic drugs are recommended as treatment options for schizophrenia in guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association. (Both Abilify and Rexulti are antipsychotic drugs.)
Guidelines from the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense recommend antipsychotic drugs as treatment options for MDD.

Abilify and Rexulti may not be right for you if you have certain medical conditions or other factors that affect your health. The two drugs share some of the same precautions, but they also have different ones. Some of these precautions are mentioned below.
Boxed warnings
Abilify and Rexulti have boxed warnings. These are serious warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A boxed warning alerts doctors and patients about drug effects that may be dangerous.
Increased risk of death in certain older adults. Antipsychotic drugs may increase the risk of death in adults ages 65 years and older with psychosis related to dementia. (Psychosis is a mental health condition that causes hallucinations or delusions.) Abilify and Rexulti are antipsychotic drugs.
Antipsychotics may also increase the risk of stroke in older adults with psychosis related to dementia. This could, in some cases, lead to death. Symptoms of stroke can include:
- headache
- confusion
- weakness in your face, arm, or leg (usually on one side of the body)
If you have stroke symptoms while taking Abilify or Rexulti, 911 or your local emergency number should be called right away.
Due to these risks, doctors typically will not prescribe Abilify or Rexulti for older adults with psychosis related to dementia. (However, Rexulti may be prescribed to older adults with this condition to treat agitation from dementia related to Alzheimer’s disease). If you’re an older adult with dementia-related psychosis, your doctor can recommend the treatment option that’s right for you.
Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and certain younger adults. Medications used to treat depression can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in younger people. This risk applies to children and adults ages 24 years and younger. Abilify and Rexulti are used to treat major depressive disorder (also called depression) in adults. While these medications are not approved to treat depression in children, they are approved to treat other conditions in certain children.
While you’re taking Abilify or Rexulti, you and your friends and family should watch for new or worsening suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Symptoms can include mood changes, such as agitation, hostility, anger, and irritability. If you have these symptoms while taking Abilify or Rexulti, tell your doctor right away.
If you have thoughts of harming yourself while taking Abilify or Rexulti, call 911 or your local emergency number right away.
Precautions
In addition to boxed warnings, Abilify and Rexulti have other warnings.
